The Lord Speaker in court dress Baroness Hayman of Dartmouth Park, in the London Borough of Camden The House of Lords elected Baroness Hayman its first ever Lord Speaker on 4 July 2006. As well as presiding over debates in the Chamber the Lord Speaker also represents the House of Lords at ceremonial occasions and acts as its ambassador both within the UK and overseas. This includes explaining the work of the House to wider audiences through an outreach programme designed to engage the public and, particularly, young people. The Lord Speaker resigns any party affiliation on election. This portrait shows the Lord Speaker in her office. She is in court dress in preparation for taking her place on the Woolsack at the start of the parliamentary day.
